Bio

Angela Bassett didn’t become a star in the wink of the eye. She earned her living by working at a beauty salon when she made a stage debut in 1985 play Black Girl. The same year, she first appeared on TV in Doubletake movie. In 1986, the performer played in her first feature film titled F/X.

Bassett made a breakthrough thanks to starring in 1993 movie What’s Love Got to Do with It. That part brought her a Golden Globe as well as an Oscar nomination. Today, she is most famed for playing in Malcolm X, Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Green Lantern, Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen plus Black Panther movies.

Angela Bassett regularly appears on TV. For instance, she had parts in Alias, ER, American Horror Story, 9-1-1 series along with playing in some films, including Betty & Coretta. Moreover, she regularly appears on stage and deals with directing and producing. She made a directorial debut with 2015 movie Whitney.

Additionally, Bassett is an activist and philanthropist. She works on raising awareness for diabetes and heart diseases. The main reason for that is that her mother died of heart issues stemmed from her Type 2 diabetes. The celebrity is also an ambassador of UNICEF.

In 1997, Angela got hitched to Law & Order star Courtney B. Vance. In 2006, they welcomed their fraternal twins: son Slater and daughter Bronwyn. The kids were born by a surrogate mother as Angela passed through unsuccessful fertility treatments. The spouses often work together. For instance, Vance portrayed his wife’s television husband on ER.

A curious fact: in 2000, Bassett refused to play in Monster’s Ball because of its sexual explicitness. As a result, the part went to Halle Berry who won an Oscar for it.
